FOCUS Missionaries

My name is Luke Oestman, and my wife, Angela, and I are missionaries at the Parish of Christ the King as part of a new movement within FOCUS (The Fellowship of Catholic University Students called Parish Based Evangelization).

“Every Christian is challenged here and now, to be actively engaged in evangelization: indeed, anyone who has truly experienced God’s saving love does not need much time or lengthy training to go out and proclaim that love” (The Joy of the Gospel #120). Pope Francis and I invite you to become a missionary disciple. A missionary disciple is someone who has encountered the “Love of Christ” and wants to continue to encounter Him daily and begin to share His Love with others.

FOCUS is part of a larger movement taking place across the nation to mobilize the laity to support their pastors in growing grass roots movements at the parish to evangelize and accompany people who are seeking the Lord.

Recognizing the dire need for Catholic campus outreach, and inspired by Pope John Paul II’s call to a “new evangelization,” Curtis Martin and his wife, Michaelann, founded FOCUS in 1998 at Benedictine College in Atchison, Kansas.

Later that year, Curtis had the rare opportunity to meet Pope John Paul II and to express to him the hope and vision he had for FOCUS. The Pope listened intently and carefully and simply told Curtis, “Be Soldiers.” Since then, FOCUS has forged ahead, impacting the faith lives of tens of thousands of college students through on-campus outreach and large-scale national conferences.

During the 2015-2016 academic year, nearly 500 missionaries will serve full-time on 113 college campuses in 36 states and Washington, D.C. More than 20,000 FOCUS alumni are involved with parishes throughout the United Sates with 547 making decisions to pursue Catholic religious vocations. By 2022, FOCUS expects to launch 75,000 alumni into America’s 17,000 plus Catholic parishes.
